Private 5-Day Desert Tour from Agadir to Merzouga

Quick answer: The 5-day Agadir to Merzouga tour is a private overland trip that takes you from Agadir through Taliouine, Taznakht and Agdz to the Sahara at Merzouga, then returns via Todra Gorge, Dades Valley and Ait Ben Haddou. You finish in Agadir or Marrakech, your choice.

Most desert tours start in Marrakech, but travellers staying on the coast often want a Sahara experience without first going inland. Rachid Morocco Tours, based in Marrakech and Casablanca and serving Agadir, designs this route so you leave directly from your hotel in Agadir and travel through the south of Morocco in a loop that avoids repeating the same roads.

Instead of the usual Atlas crossing, you head east through the Souss Valley and the Anti-Atlas: a quieter side of Morocco, with saffron country around Taliouine, Berber villages, the Draa Valley palm groves and the dune sea of Erg Chebbi. On the way back you add the Todra Gorge, Dades Valley and the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou.

Starting from Agadir

Agadir is Morocco's main Atlantic resort city, rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake and known for its long beach, its marina and its sunshine almost all year. It is also a convenient base for the south: the road to the Sahara runs through Taroudant country and the Anti-Atlas, so you reach real desert scenery quickly.

If you are starting in Marrakech, see our Erg Chebbi desert safari 5 day tour, which takes you to the same dunes in the opposite direction.

5-Day Agadir to Merzouga Itinerary

Drive times are approximate and depend on traffic, weather and your stops. Your driver-guide adjusts the plan to your pace.

DAY 1

Agadir – Taliouine – Taznakht – Agdz

Agadir ➜ Taliouine ➜ Taznakht ➜ Agdz
🚗 ~ 7–8 h with stops🛏 Overnight: Agdz

Your driver picks you up from your hotel in Agadir in the morning. The road heads inland through the Souss Valley, then climbs into the Anti-Atlas, with argan trees and terraced villages along the way.

Taliouine

Taliouine sits at the foot of the Siroua massif and is the centre of Moroccan saffron production. Depending on the season, you can visit a saffron cooperative and taste local tea.

Taznakht

Taznakht is known for its hand-woven Berber carpets. Stop at a women's weaving workshop to see the patterns being made.

Agdz

Continue to Agdz in the Draa Valley, a green palm-grove town beneath the Jbel Kissane. Arrive in time for a walk through the palms before dinner and overnight in a local guesthouse or kasbah hotel.

DAY 2

Agdz – Alnif – Rissani – Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)

Agdz ➜ Alnif ➜ Rissani ➜ Merzouga
🚗 ~ 6–7 h with stops🏜 Overnight: Merzouga / desert camp

After breakfast, leave the Draa Valley and cross the stony plateaus of the south-east. The landscape turns open and mineral, with black hamada and distant dunes.

Alnif

Alnif is famous for its fossils: trilobites and orthoceras from the Palaeozoic era. A short stop at a fossil workshop is a good break from the road.

Rissani

Rissani was once the gateway of the Tafilalet and the ancestral home of the Alaouite dynasty. If your dates allow, its traditional souk is a lively stop.

Merzouga & Erg Chebbi

Reach Merzouga in the late afternoon. Take a camel trek into the dunes for sunset, then spend the night in a desert camp, with dinner, Berber music around the fire and a sky full of stars.

DAY 3

Erg Chebbi Discovery by Jeep

Sunrise in the dunes ➜ 4x4 excursion ➜ Merzouga
🚙 Full day in the area🛏 Overnight: Merzouga

Wake early to watch the sun rise over the dunes. After breakfast, a 4x4 takes you beyond the camps to see the less-visited parts of the Merzouga region.

  • Drive across the dune edges and hamada with your guide
  • Meet nomadic Berber families and learn about desert life
  • Visit Khamlia, a village known for Gnawa-style music of Sub-Saharan origin
  • See the seasonal Dayet Srji lake when it holds water
  • Free afternoon to relax, try sandboarding or enjoy the pool at your hotel
DAY 4

Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley

Merzouga ➜ Tinghir / Todra Gorge ➜ Dades Valley
🚗 ~ 5–6 h with stops🛏 Overnight: Dades Valley

Say goodbye to the Sahara and drive west along the edge of the Tafilalet to Tinghir.

Todra Gorge

Walk into the narrow canyon where limestone cliffs rise to around 300 m on each side. It is one of the best places in Morocco for a short walk and photos.

Dades Valley

Continue to the Dades Valley, famous for its rock formations nicknamed "Monkey Fingers" and the hairpin road of the Dades Gorges. Overnight in a guesthouse with valley views.

DAY 5

Choose: Dades Valley – Ait Ben Haddou – Agadir or Marrakech

Dades ➜ Skoura / Ouarzazate ➜ Ait Ben Haddou ➜ Agadir or Marrakech
🚗 Long driving day🏁 Tour ends: Agadir or Marrakech

Leave the Dades Valley via the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" toward Ouarzazate. Stop at Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified village (ksar) listed by UNESCO and used as a set for many films. Walk up through the alleys for views over the valley.

Your end point

  • Option A – Agadir: return to the coast for the evening.
  • Option B – Marrakech: cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass and finish in Marrakech, ideal if you are continuing your trip inland or flying from Marrakech.

Tell us your choice when booking so we can plan your timings and departure.
