Pickup is from your riad or hotel in Marrakech in the morning. From there, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains over the Tizi n'Tichka pass — the drive up is where most of the mountain scenery is, with Berber villages built into the hillsides and, depending on the season, snow-capped peaks in the distance. This first stretch of driving is usually the longest single leg of the day, so we build in stops along the way rather than doing it in one go.
The main stop of the day is Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified village (ksar) that has appeared in a number of films and TV series. You'll have time to walk through the kasbah itself, not just view it from the road. From there, the route continues past Ouarzazate — Morocco's "Hollywood of the desert" — before heading into the Valley of Roses and on to the Dades Valley for the night.

After breakfast, the route continues through the rock formations of the Dades Valley before reaching Todra Gorge, where towering canyon walls narrow to a natural corridor you can walk through on foot. It's one of the most photographed stops on this route, and worth the short walk in rather than just a drive-by.
From Todra, the landscape changes noticeably — the road runs through flatter, drier terrain past Tinghir, Erfoud and the Tafilalt palm groves before reaching Merzouga in the afternoon. This is when the Sahara portion of the trip actually begins: you'll transfer to camels at the edge of the dunes and ride out into Erg Chebbi as the sun starts to lower and the sand shifts through orange, pink and gold.
The camel trek to the camp typically takes around 45 minutes to just over an hour, depending on which camp you're staying at and the pace of the group. It's a gentle ride rather than a physically demanding one, but comfortable, loose clothing helps. Dinner at the camp is a traditional Moroccan meal, usually followed by Berber drums around the fire before the desert sky — genuinely dark out here, far from any city lights — takes over.

The final day is the return journey to Marrakech. Depending on road conditions and how much time you'd like to spend on final stops, your driver can route you back through the Draa Valley and past Ait Benhaddou again for anyone who wants extra photos, or take the more direct route back over the High Atlas.
If it's a clear day, the descent back into Marrakech from the mountains is a nice way to close out the trip — you'll see the Ourika plains open up ahead as the road drops out of the Atlas. Drop-off is at your accommodation in Marrakech, typically in the late afternoon or early evening depending on your pickup time on day one and any stops along the way.
