The Erg Chebbi dunes are the Morocco desert most travelers picture: towering golden sand, silent horizons, camel caravans at sunset and a sky full of stars. Located near the village of Merzouga in the southeast of the country, Erg Chebbi is the most iconic Sahara destination in Morocco, and one of the most rewarding places to include in a private Morocco tour.
In this guide, we share everything you need to plan your trip: what to do, where to sleep, when to go and how to get there. It all comes from our experience organizing private desert journeys from Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca and beyond.
Erg Chebbi Dunes Morocco: What Makes Them Special?
An erg is a large field of wind-blown sand. Erg Chebbi is a sea of dunes that rises suddenly out of flat, stony desert. It stretches more than 20 km from north to south, and the highest dunes reach roughly 150 meters. You can read more about its geography and formation on the Erg Chebbi page on Wikipedia.
The colors change through the day: pale gold at noon, deep orange at sunset, soft pink at dawn. This is exactly why photographers and couples travel so far to see it.
Merzouga is the village where you arrive. Erg Chebbi is the dune field beside it. When a camp says "Merzouga desert" or "Erg Chebbi Sahara", it means the same destination.
10 Best Things to Do in the Erg Chebbi Dunes Morocco
Watch the Sunrise
Wake early, climb a nearby dune and watch the first light spill across the sand. Cool air, long shadows and total silence. Many travelers say this is the best moment of the whole trip.
Enjoy a Sahara Sunset
Late afternoon is perfect for walking the ridges. As the sun drops, the dunes shift from gold to deep red.
Take a Camel Trek
The traditional way into the dunes is by camel, usually for about an hour before reaching camp. It is unforgettable, but it is optional.
Try Sandboarding
Climb a steep dune with a board and slide down. No experience is needed, and it is great fun for teenagers and adults.
Explore by 4x4
A private 4x4 excursion takes you beyond the main dunes: desert tracks, rocky plains, small oases and the dramatic Black Desert.
Visit a Nomad Family
Amazigh nomadic families still live in this region. A respectful visit with tea and conversation shows how people adapt to life in the desert.
Gnawa Music in Khamlia
The small village of Khamlia is known for its Gnawa musicians. Their rhythms add a cultural side to your desert trip.
Sleep in a Desert Camp
A night in the dunes is the heart of the experience. Choose from simple traditional tents to luxury camps with real beds and private bathrooms.
Go Stargazing
With almost no light pollution, the night sky is spectacular. Walk away from the fire, let your eyes adjust and look up.
Traditional Desert Dinner
Enjoy Moroccan salads, tagine or couscous, fresh bread, fruit and mint tea, followed by drumming around the fire.
Standard Camp or Luxury Camp?
Standard desert camps offer comfortable tents, shared facilities, dinner, breakfast, music and a campfire. They are authentic and good value.
Luxury desert camps add larger private tents, en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, better bedding and often a private terrace facing the dunes. In winter, some also provide heated tents, which makes a big difference on cold nights.

How to Get to the Erg Chebbi Dunes Morocco
Merzouga is far from the major cities, so the journey is part of the adventure and deserves good planning.
From Marrakech
The route passes through the High Atlas, Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge. Allow at least 3 to 4 days to avoid rushing.
From Fes
Cross the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and Midelt, then continue through the Ziz Valley and Erfoud. Three days works well.
From Casablanca
Most travelers combine the desert with a longer circuit: Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Merzouga, Dades Valley, Ait Benhaddou and Marrakech.
From Errachidia
This is the closest airport to Merzouga. A private transfer gives you more time in the dunes and less on the road.
What to Pack for the Sahara

Erg Chebbi vs Agafay vs Zagora
Erg Chebbi
True sand dunes and a remote Sahara atmosphere. Best for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Agafay
A rocky desert close to Marrakech. Great if you only have one evening to spare.
Zagora
A shorter trip from Marrakech with a different desert character, good when time is limited.
