Once inhabited by the Romans, Volubilis has earned UNESCO World Heritage recognition and gained international acclaim as a featured location in Martin Scorsese’s film. “The Last Temptation of Christ.” Our adventure commences with an exploration of the captivating Roman ruins. Adorned with exquisite mosaics and vibrant tiles illustrating Roman mythology. These ruins sprawl across several acres, offering glimpses of ancient walls. Fragments of colossal columns, the capitol, the basilica, and a triumphant arch.
After a delightful lunch at one of Moulay Idriss’s renowned local restaurants, we’ll briefly stroll through the town. You’ll have the opportunity to stand atop one of the twin hills of Moulay Idriss, taking in panoramic views of the surroundings.
Meknes: The Imperial City
Our journey then leads us to Meknes, commencing with a passage through the magnificent triumphal arch. This arch, standing at sixteen meters in height with an eight-meter-long arch, is celebrated as one of Morocco’s most stunning architectural wonders. Pass beneath the arches, flanked by towering protruding turrets, and enter Place El-Hedime (Square of Ruins), connecting the medina and the kasbah. The square is adorned with modern residential buildings and a bustling covered food souk (market).
Explore the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, a place of reverence featuring a suite of three rooms, twelve stately columns, and a sanctuary that once hosted the formidable sultan. The tombs evoke the grandeur of the Saadian Tombs in Marrakesh.
