Your driver picks you up from your Marrakech riad or hotel early in the morning and heads south toward the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (around 2,260m), winding past Berber villages, almond terraces and long mountain views before dropping into Ouarzazate.
You'll stop at Aït Benhaddou, Morocco's best-known fortified ksar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a walk through its red clay towers and film-set alleyways. From there the route continues past Ouarzazate — Morocco's "Hollywood" film hub — through the palm groves of Skoura and the Rose Valley (El Kelaâ M'Gouna), before arriving in the Dadès Valley in the late afternoon, where you'll spend the night at Hotel Grand Canyon Dadès or a similar hotel/kasbah overlooking the gorge, with dinner included.

After breakfast, continue through the dramatic landscapes of the Dadès and Todra regions toward the Sahara. A highlight of the morning is the Todra Gorge, where sheer 300-metre rock walls narrow over a river-cut canyon road — a striking contrast to the desert that lies ahead.
The route then crosses the fossil town of Erfoud and the old caravan city of Rissani, once a gateway for Saharan trade routes, before reaching Merzouga in the early-to-mid afternoon. Here you'll leave the vehicle and set off on a camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes in time for sunset — watching the dunes turn gold, then deep orange, as the light fades.
Your camel guide leads you to Sanmao Luxury Desert Camp, where a traditional Moroccan dinner, Berber drum music around the fire, and a sky full of stars await. You sleep in a private tent with an en-suite bathroom and hot shower.

After your camel trek across the dunes, you arrive at camp just as the sun sets behind Erg Chebbi. The evening unfolds around a shared table: a traditional Moroccan dinner, drums and Berber music around the campfire, and, once the generators quiet down, one of the darkest night skies you'll ever see.
In the morning, many guests rise early to catch the sunrise over the dunes before a simple breakfast and the camel or 4x4 transfer back to Merzouga to rejoin the vehicle.
Your camel trek starts from the edge of Merzouga village and winds up into the Erg Chebbi dune field, guided by a local Berber camel handler. The ride to camp takes around 1 to 1.5 hours, timed so you're on the dunes for sunset — one of the most photographed moments of any Morocco desert tour.
No riding experience is needed; guides walk alongside the camels and help riders on and off. If camel riding isn't comfortable for you or your group (for example, young children or travelers with back issues), let us know in advance and we can arrange a 4x4 transfer to camp instead.
