Erg Chebbi Desert Safari 4 Days from Marrakech: Your Sahara Adventure

Erg Chebbi is the most famous sand sea in Morocco: a wall of orange dunes, some rising more than 100 metres, standing at the edge of the village of Merzouga near the Algerian border. This 4-day private safari is designed for travellers who want the full journey, not just the destination. You leave Marrakech, climb the High Atlas, pass kasbahs and palm groves, and arrive in the Sahara at the golden hour for a camel ride and a night in a desert camp.

With Rachid Morocco Tours the tour is private: your own vehicle, your own pace, and a local driver who knows where to stop for the best views, a good lunch and a quiet photo. Nothing is rushed, and we can adapt stops to your interests.

Why Choose This Erg Chebbi Desert Safari 4 Days from Marrakech?

Many tours go to Merzouga and back the same way. This route makes a loop: you go out through Ouarzazate, Rose Valley, Dades and Todra, and come back via Alnif, Agdez, Ait Benhaddou and the Telouet road, so you see different landscapes almost every hour.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

DAY 1

Marrakech β†’ Atlas Mountains β†’ Ouarzazate β†’ Rose Valley β†’ Dades Valley

We collect you from your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the morning and drive south into the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs through Berber villages and viewpoints before the pass, then descends into the drier, more dramatic landscapes on the other side.

After the mountains we reach Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert and known for its film studios and nearby kasbahs. The afternoon continues through the Rose Valley (VallΓ©e des Roses), a green strip of villages and rose fields; the colourful bloom season is spring, but the scenery is lovely all year. We finish in the Dades Valley, with its red cliffs and strange rock formations, where we spend the night in a hotel or guesthouse with dinner.

DAY 2

Dades Valley β†’ Todra Gorge β†’ Khettara β†’ Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)

After breakfast we leave Dades for Todra Gorge, where limestone walls rise up to around 300 metres on either side of a narrow riverbed and a palm oasis. It is a great place for a short walk.

We continue east across wide, open plains and stop to learn about the khettara, the ancient underground water channels that bring water from the mountains to the oasis villages. They are one of the cleverest traditional irrigation systems in Morocco. After lunch we drive on to Merzouga.

Late afternoon is camel time. You ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes in time for sunset, the best light of the trip. At camp you have a Berber dinner, music around the fire, tea and a sky full of stars. You sleep in a desert tent.

DAY 3

Merzouga β†’ Alnif β†’ Agdez β†’ Ait Benhaddou

Wake up early to watch the sunrise colour the dunes, then ride the camels back to Merzouga for breakfast and a quick refresh. Climbing a dune on foot for the view is optional and worth it.

Today is a long driving day through the south: Alnif (known for its fossils), the palm-fringed town of Agdez and the Draa Valley, with many photo stops on the way. We reach Ait Benhaddou in the evening, where you stay overnight close to the famous UNESCO-listed ksar.

DAY 4

Ait Benhaddou β†’ Telouet β†’ Atlas Mountains β†’ Marrakech

In the morning you can explore the earthen ksar of Ait Benhaddou, which has appeared in many films and series. Then we take the scenic road to Telouet, where the old kasbah of the Glaoui family still shows its richly decorated rooms.

From Telouet we cross the High Atlas again and head back to Marrakech, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening, where we drop you at your hotel or riad.

Best Time for the Erg Chebbi Desert Safari

You can visit Merzouga all year, but the experience changes a lot with the season. To learn more about the dunes themselves, see the Erg Chebbi page on Wikipedia. The best periods are spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November), with winter days (December to February) also very good if you pack warm clothes for the night.

Best

Spring Β· Mar–May

Warm, clear days and mild nights. Rose Valley is at its prettiest. Occasional wind and sand haze in some weeks.

Best

Autumn Β· Oct–Nov

Pleasant temperatures, soft light for photos and comfortable nights in the camp. One of the most popular periods.

Good

Winter Β· Dec–Feb

Sunny days but cold desert nights, sometimes near freezing. Fewer crowds, very clear stars, and snow on the Atlas peaks.

Hot

Summer Β· Jun–Aug

Daytime temperatures in Merzouga can be extreme. Possible, but we suggest early starts and lots of water.

Best time of day for the dunes

Sunset and sunrise are the magic hours. The low sun gives the dunes deep orange and red shades and long shadows, and the temperature is comfortable for walking and riding. Midday is too bright and hot for good photos.

What to Pack for the Erg Chebbi Safari

You only need a small overnight bag for the desert camp; the rest of your luggage can stay in the vehicle or at your hotel in Marrakech.

πŸ‘• Clothing

Light, breathable clothes for the day, long sleeves for sun protection, comfortable trousers and a warm jacket or fleece for the evening and morning.

πŸ‘Ÿ Footwear

Closed, comfortable shoes for the gorge and ruins. Sandals or light shoes are fine on the dunes.

🧒 Sun protection

Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm. A scarf or shesh to protect your face from wind and sand.

πŸ”¦ Small items

Head torch or phone light, power bank, wet wipes, toiletries, a little cash in dirhams for lunches and tips.

πŸ§₯ Winter extras

Hat, gloves and thermal layers for camp nights from November to March.

πŸ“· Camera

Bring a phone or camera with a protective case against sand, and a spare memory card.
