Few trips change how you see Morocco like a night in the Sahara. One day you are haggling in a medina; two days later you are sitting on a dune ridge with a glass of mint tea, watching the sand turn from honey to copper to rose. A Morocco desert safari is the journey that connects those two worlds: mountain passes, palm oases, clay kasbahs and, finally, the sea of dunes at Merzouga.

At Rachid Morocco Tours, we plan private, flexible desert safaris for couples, families, friends and small groups. Your route can begin in Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca, Tangier, Agadir or another city, and we shape it around your dates, comfort level and budget.

What Is a Morocco Desert Safari?

Think of it as a road journey with a destination worth the drive. A desert safari in Morocco links scenic travel days with time on the sand itself, usually including at least one night in or beside the dunes. It is part road trip, part cultural encounter, part outdoor adventure.

Depending on how long you have, your safari can include:

  • A private car, 4x4 or minivan with an experienced driver
  • A crossing of the High Atlas or Middle Atlas
  • Kasbahs and Amazigh (Berber) villages
  • Dades Valley and Todra Gorge
  • Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate
  • Rissani and the Tafilalet oasis
  • Camel trekking at sunset
  • 4x4 tracks across the desert
  • A night in a desert camp
  • Dinner, drumming and a campfire
  • Sandboarding
  • Sunrise and stargazing

Merzouga is the main gateway to the Moroccan Sahara. This small village sits right beside the Erg Chebbi dune field, whose sand ridges rise to well over 100 metres and stretch for miles along the Algerian border region.

Why Choose a Desert Safari in Morocco?

Because the Sahara is only the last chapter. The road to it is where Morocco shows its range.

Mountains

Hairpin passes through the High Atlas or cedar-scented Middle Atlas, with villages clinging to slopes.

Kasbahs

Fortified mud-brick settlements built along old caravan routes, many still lived in.

Oases

Ribbons of palm green set against red rock and pale gravel plains.

Dunes

The classic Saharan skyline: smooth, shifting ridges that change colour every hour.

You also meet the people. Amazigh hosts, Gnawa musicians and nomadic families are part of what makes the experience memorable, not just the scenery.

Best Places for a Morocco Desert Safari

"The desert" in Morocco means several quite different landscapes. Choose by how much time you have and what you want to see.

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi

The postcard Sahara. Tall dunes, long camel treks, proper desert camps and the best sunrises. If you want sand in your shoes and a night under real stars, start here. Merzouga suits travellers who can spare at least four days.

Zagora and the Draa Valley

Closer to Marrakech and often easier to fit into a shorter trip. Expect palm groves, kasbahs and a gentler, lower-key desert atmosphere. Our longer routes can also include the quieter Erg Chigaga option for travellers who prefer a wilder, more remote dune area.

Agafay Desert

A stony, lunar-looking plateau about 45 minutes from Marrakech. It has no tall dunes, but it works well for a sunset dinner, quad biking or a one-night camp when time is short.

Quick rule: one evening free in Marrakech? Choose Agafay. Want towering dunes and a full Sahara night? Choose Merzouga.

Desert Safari Routes From Your Starting City

From Marrakech

The most popular start. A typical line is Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka pass → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga. You can return the same way, loop back by another road, or carry on north to Fes. Browse our ready-made options: 3 days, 4 days and 5 days, or see all Morocco tours from Marrakech.

From Fes

A scenic northern approach: Fes → Ifrane → Azrou cedar forest → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Erfoud → Rissani → Merzouga. The scenery shifts from green highlands to rocky valleys to open desert in a single day. See our 4-day Fes desert tour or the 5-day Fes route, and our full list of Morocco tours from Fes.

From Casablanca

Ideal if you land at Casablanca airport. Build a loop such as Casablanca → Rabat → Fes → Midelt → Merzouga → Dades → Ouarzazate → Marrakech, so you see imperial cities, mountains and desert without backtracking. Start with our 7-day Morocco tour or explore tours from Casablanca.

From Agadir

Distances are long, so plan at least five days. A scenic option is Agadir → Taroudant → Taliouine → Ouarzazate → Draa Valley → Zagora or Merzouga, taking in saffron country and the southern oases on the way.

From Tangier

Travellers arriving by ferry or flight can link Chefchaouen, Fes and the Sahara in one private circuit. Tours from Tangier can be adapted for desert time.

What to Do on a Morocco Desert Safari

1. Camel Trekking at Sunset

A slow, swaying ride into the dunes as the light softens. It is the classic way to reach camp, and the guides will help you mount and adjust. It usually lasts around an hour to ninety minutes.

2. Watch the Dunes Change Colour

Sunset paints the ridges orange and then deep red. Find a quiet crest, stay still for a few minutes and notice how the desert noise drops away.

3. Sleep in a Desert Camp

Dinner is served in the dunes, followed by tea, a campfire and often drumming. After the music stops, the sky takes over. Away from city light, the Milky Way is clearly visible on clear nights.

4. Sunrise From the Ridge

Set an early alarm and climb the nearest dune. A cool breeze, golden light and total silence make it the highlight for many guests.

5. Explore by 4x4

Cover more ground than a camel can. A half-day 4x4 loop can include Khamlia village (famed for Gnawa music), nomad tents, the dark Black Desert plains and, after rains, seasonal lake areas where flamingos sometimes appear.

6. Try Sandboarding

Strap on a board and glide down a steep dune face. It is simple to learn and good fun at any age. The climb back up is the real workout.

7. Meet Local Communities

Share tea with a nomadic family, visit a fossil workshop in Erfoud, or wander Rissani's souk. These stops turn a scenic trip into a cultural one.

What Is a Desert Camp Really Like?

Camps vary a lot, so check what your booking includes before you pay.

Standard Camp

  • Simple tent with beds and blankets
  • Dinner and breakfast
  • Music and campfire
  • Often shared bathrooms

Luxury Camp

  • Large private tent
  • Ensuite bathroom and hot shower
  • Electricity and proper beds
  • Restaurant-style dinner and lounge areas
Ask before you book: bathroom type, heating in winter, whether the camel ride or a 4x4 transfer is included, and how far the camp is from the dunes you want to climb.

How Many Days Do You Need?

DurationWhat works
1 dayAgafay desert: sunset, dinner, camel ride or quad biking from Marrakech.
2 daysAgafay overnight or a quick Zagora trip. Too short to reach Merzouga comfortably.

4 daysThe sweet spot: more relaxed pace and time for Dades or Todra. See the 4-day desert tour.
5+ daysExtra nights, deeper cultural stops and room for photography. See the 5-day desert tour.
7–10 daysCombine the Sahara with Fes, Marrakech, the Atlas and the coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Morocco desert safari?

For the classic Sahara, a private trip to Merzouga and Erg Chebbi with one night in a desert camp is hard to beat. Add a second night if you want a slower pace.

How many days do I need?

Four days is a comfortable minimum from Marrakech. Three is possible but involves long drives. Five or more lets you add Todra Gorge, cultural stops and extra desert time.

Can I do a desert safari from Marrakech?

Yes, Marrakech is the most common starting point. Routes cross the Atlas and pass Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, Dades and Todra before reaching Merzouga.

Can I start from Fes?

Yes. The route runs through Ifrane, the Middle Atlas, Midelt, the Ziz Valley, Erfoud and Rissani.

Is Merzouga in the Sahara?

Yes. Merzouga is one of the main entry points to the Moroccan Sahara, next to the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Do I have to ride a camel?

No. A 4x4 transfer to camp is always an option.

Is it safe?

Private trips with an experienced driver and established accommodation are a comfortable, well-trodden way to see the region. Follow your driver's advice about weather and dune activities.

What should I wear?

Light clothes by day, warm layers at night, and closed shoes. In winter, bring a proper jacket.

Can I combine Marrakech, the Sahara and Fes?

Yes. This is one of our favourite routes: Marrakech, Ait Benhaddou, Dades, Merzouga, the Middle Atlas and finally Fes.
